Dr. Nikos Papadimitriou is a Special Functional Scientist at the Laboratory of Solar and Other Energy Systems since 2021. He holds a Diploma (5-year studies) in Chemical Engineering (National Technical University of Athens, 2004), a Master's Degree in Energy Production and Management (NTUA, 2007) and a PhD (NTUA, 2009) in the field of gas storage in solid materials for energy and environmental applications. He has worked at NCSR "Demokritos" as a postdoctoral researcher (2010-2016), at Leiden Academic Center for Drug Research (Netherlands) as a visiting researcher (2012-2014) and at Greek Public Power Corporation (PPC) S.A. as the head of Fuels and Lubricants Laboratory (2016-2021). In the latter post, he was responsible for the accreditation of the laboratory according to the ISO 17025 standard. His research interests mostly reside in the field of Materials Science. In particular, they are related to chemical thermodynamics, phase equilibrium, statistical mechanics and molecular simulation. In terms of applications, he has great experience in hydrogen storage, in CO2 sequestration and exploitation, and in the utilization of clathrate hydrates in various industrial processes, such as: energy production and storage and gas separation. He has also studied the diffusion through biological membranes. In the works above, he has used both experimental and computational methods. Recently, he deals with the exploitation of solar thermal energy, the modeling and optimization of solar thermal systems and processes as well as with the energy saving and efficiency on a domestic and industrial scale. Additionally, he deals with science communication to the general public and he is a member of the scientific-theatrical team “Science Reactors”. He has more than 20 publications in international journals (Scopus h-index 10), more than 30 announcements in conferences, he is a reviewer in many journals in his field, and he has been the scientific supervisor of several research projects funded by various organizations (IKY, GSRT, NSRF, PPC). His work has been honored with awards and distinctions (from IUPAC, IKY, Eugenides Foundation, etc.).
